I believe you don't need Phase if you're on a QE invoker, exort gives you enough damage. The playstyle of a QE invoker is generally to dominate the mid, push the tower when they leave the lane, and sun strike other lanes rather than ganking them. Because of this fairly passive playstyle, Midas helps Invoker get a level advantage (so he can get double forge spirits sooner).
What sampson said.
I do not play invoker but one of my friend list guys do quite a bit:

He typically gets phase/force staff/euls or sheepstick and scepter. If he is doing awesome farming mid, he grabs a Hand Of Midas before 6:00 min mark 8 tops.
Yeah I would ditch the drums and probably get force staff instead, then roll into your ags scepter. Invoker is probably one of the hardest or the hardest characters to play anyways. If your side lanes feed like that where your other teammates are making you average a death a minute I mean its a tough climb no matter what.
im not a fan of drums on invoker, i prefer higher mobility items like blink and forcestaff, but i dont see a reason to be flamed for building it... its still a good item in general.
@caveman
in regard to your friend, whats his mmr? because i could not see an invoker living very long in a teamfight without at least 2 mobility items, and he seems to be doing euls/sheep rush every game...
Thanks for the replies guys. There was no way we were going to win that anyways (Tide ults when the enemy was songed, No tide ult when they were grouped as 5, etc.). I was just surprised to see so much hate by going drums.
By no means am I saying I played perfect. But man there were some big mistakes made by my teamates.
if you go QE, you should build blink -> euls. this gives you mobility from blink and MS from euls, as well as survivability from tornado, good mana regen, and the ability to 3 spell combo with euls scepter.
and if you go QW, you should build blink -> forcestaff, which gives you extremely high mobility which helps a lot in teamfights because you do so little damage after tornado + emp so it helps chase as well as survive.
before i bought blink, i though it was situational, but then i tried it out and realised blink is actually so core on invoker, i cant stand to play him without it anymore
drums is best item get it on any hero
Wink would know best here out of anyone I like his builds.
Lagger why would you do 4 or 5 sets of drums? It doesn't stack the movement speed right? Just stats? Weird.
Whatever happens on SE asian servers better stay on SE asian servers. all drums new meta.....
Oh my favorite LAGGER build so far:
http://dotabuff.com/matches/455640930
Triple quelling blade on a shadow shaman.
im pretty sure lagger just sells all his items and buys multiple items for lelz at the end of a game
Drums are awesome on invoker, if you go that line of midas + phase + blink ( force, euls, etc ) simply because you get that much needed health.
Some guy was screaming for the enemy team to report me once for buying a dagon on bounty

Has this build become obsolete? We weren't trying a pushing strat by any means so I didn't do Basi or Necro. What item choices would have been better? Phase, Force? Or did I just have someone wanting to place blame on someone for losing?!

I'm aware none of us did very good. We got outplayed bigtime. But Dazzle wasn't very happy with me and I was the only one catching shit.
