Not offtopic: I guide them if I know how to play the hero, and flame them if I don't :P

I am doing it myself, so my opinion might be not objective. However, I usually ask my party mates in advance whether they mind me picking shit, and if they do, I pick something familiar for me.

i don't tell them that it's my first time playing qop, I still crush people.
If a teammate picks reasonable hero for the first time it's fine, I had the fun of people randoming sutff like meepo, brood, ember, earth spirit. i cried in a corner for 45 minutes until our ancient fell

Pray that they are wind-up merchants and that it is actually their best hero.
