It kinda depends on the hero rather than the role. For example you can almost always first pick beastmaster, lion, doom, earth spirit etc but you can't do it with dark seer, broodmother, dazzle, chen, enigma or other position 3/4/5 heroes. However, you should always leave your carry/mid to have the last 2 picks since they actually need to do well and they can use every advantage they can get.
Generally a hero that isnt easily countered should be picked first.

It also depends on if the hero is likely to be banned. Earth Spirit or Beastmaster are likely to be banned for example, so if you want to pick them, then you will likely have to first pick them.
TheMaverick, i was talking about the usual AP rank, not captain mode. Captain mode is a bit more balanced as one person makes the decisions.
The porblem arises only when playing with random people in AP ranked. Naturally mid has to be the last pick, but often support is last picked coz no one wants to support. Anyway, there is just so little time to organize things with random teammate. How to make some consensus that pick-and-counter pick should be reasonable?
