There is more to supporting than just buying wards and dust. True sight even sees your play as carry. But to humor you, I once played Invoker as a support because I wanted to meme. Everyone wanted to report me at first but that didn't happen.
Sven ! There was a fully farmed Riki on the other side that was killing me every single time in the fights cause our supp didn't buy a single Sentry/Dust. Then I started to buy only Sentries/dust XD and we won that game !

funnily enough i won all games other than the roaming sniper support (still had more or same hero damage then 2 of the cores, most assists and better kda than cores, dont ask me how)
When i played unranked and some russkie would pick troll jungle i would quiet often just pick some dumb stuff to annoy him, thats why i have so many of those ''odd support''-games
Hipster naga roaming as well, right before pros started doing it, I’m not saying I’m meta or a genius or anything but I made a thread about this and even Cookie commebted something like “you can play any hero in any role, you can go Crystal Maiden carry, that doesn’t make it good”
Supporting is what I do best, and I'm the type of Dota player who loves experimenting different ways of supporting, I kinda have a list for this topic.
I used to play Invoker as support often, but it was really a long time ago. I find his disables pretty good, and well, uh.. I take 1 level for each orb, take 3 levels on Wex, max Exort, then finish maxing Quas. I don't go Aghs and skip Midas, and instead of carry boots, I'd go Arcane. I'd make either Atos or Eul, and Dagger if possible. I mean, I could often save my teammates just by using Snap and Tornado, I can save myself with Ghost, and Ice Wall and Alacrity really helps during team fights.
I also have tried Sven as a support. I find his AoE stun that not many support has really good. Warcry is also good during team fights. He's also not so easy to be killed. I go Arcane since he doesn't have a lot of mana, rush Aghs, then either get SB or Dagger.
Puck also used to be one of my faves support heroes, Puck's coil and silence is really useful during ganking, and his 1st makes it easy for him to escape. I'd go Dagger and Eul like any carry Puck, but Arcane instead of Treads. Force Staff situationally.
The recent one that I have tried is Spectre. I thought that her 1st and ulti was really useful for roaming, but I was wrong. She's completely useless in supporting, and I would never, ever, use her again as a support.
And despite all this, I have a very good friend that really loves using support heroes are carries, so I think we play pretty well. I only use core heroes as support if I'm in a party match though.
One time my friend got really mad at our real support for taking last hits and refusing to pull in lane so he played Spectre as a support. Bought lots of aura items and it actually worked, we won.
Sven is the way if you want unconventional support.
